About the museum
The Núcleo Museológico de Arte Sacra (sacred art museum unit) opened to the public in May 1998 in the Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, with the exhibition “Um olhar sobre as igrejas de Alcoutim” (A Look at the Churches of Alcoutim). On 5 August 2008, by decision of the municipal executive, it moved to the Capela de Santo António, on Avenida Duarte Pacheco.
In that space, the parish of Alcoutim had organised, in collaboration with the municipality, a sacred art display for the Jubilee, which remained on view until August 2008. This display was then reworked and merged with the exhibition on the churches, adapted to the new location.
The exhibition follows a historical route that begins with the Manueline style of the 16th century and ends with Neoclassicism of the 19th century, with information panels and reproductions of the most important works. It aims to make known the sacred art trail of the municipality and also serves as an educational resource for local people and schools.
