About the museum

The Museo Municipal de Palma del Río was created by agreement of the plenary session of the town council on 28 December 1989. Its holdings come from the cultural and heritage activity that the council has carried out since 1980, largely thanks to donations from local residents. An order of 23 May 1997 entered it in the Registry of Museums of Andalusia.

Since 1995 it has occupied the Caballerizas Reales (Royal Stables), a freestanding 16th-century building linked to the Palacio Portocarrero, on Calle Cardenal Portocarrero. The museum was renovated in 2015, and that reform gave it the layout by which it is known today.

The collection is organised into four sections: archaeology, ethnography, art and the bullfighting world. The permanent exhibition is spread over five rooms devoted to Prehistory, Antiquity, the Middle Ages, old trades and the art collections. The museum also has a temporary exhibition room and a teaching room. The bullfighting holdings are displayed separately, in the Casa-Museo Manuel Benítez “El Cordobés”, on Calle Ancha.
