About the museum
The Museo Municipal de Álora, created in 2003, is housed in the Escuela de Cristo, a 16th-century Mudéjar building adjoining the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, on the Plaza Baja de la Despedía. It may have been the chapel of the vanished Hospital de San Sebastián, founded by the Catholic Monarchs, and later the seat of the priestly order of the Escuela de Cristo, from which it takes its present name.
The main hall has a square plan, with eight perimeter pillars and four central ones supporting nine groin vaults (bóvedas vaídas). The whole structure is of brick and reinforced robustly, which made it possible to place the former tithe barn (cilla decimal), used to store grain, on the upper floor.
The museum tells the history of Álora and its municipality in chronological order, with pieces, explanatory panels and an audiovisual. The route begins with the prehistory of the Guadalhorce valley and continues with the Phoenician presence and the Iberians of the Cerro de las Torres, the Roman period and the city of Iluro, the Islamic period with its castle and, finally, the Christian conquest of 1484 and the contemporary age.
