About the museum
The Casa Gerald Brenan is the former house “La Reina de los Ángeles”, on Calle Torremolinos in Churriana, where the British writer and Hispanist Gerald Brenan lived with his wife, the American writer Gamel Woolsey. Figures such as Bertrand Russell, Ernest Hemingway, Laurence Olivier and Orson Welles passed through the house. Brenan, author of “Al sur de Granada”, had previously lived in Yegen, in the Alpujarra.
The Málaga city council restored the house over more than a decade, with an investment of more than €1 million, and opened it as a cultural meeting centre. Its project follows the spirit of the author and seeks to foster dialogue between Anglo-Saxon and Spanish artists, especially from Málaga and the Churriana district, with literature and music performances, debates, competitions and writers' residencies.
Although the council itself makes clear that it is not a house museum, the centre dedicates a room to recreating the atmosphere of the house, with objects, books from Brenan's library, old photographs and postcards gathered among neighbours in Churriana who knew him. The multipurpose hall, with a small stage, also functions as a reference library with the bibliography of Brenan and his circle.
