About the museum

The Museo Naval de Ferrol opened in March 1986 in the historic precinct of the Arsenal, in the building known as the San Campio prison, a former convict barracks built in the 18th century. The origin of the collection lies in the discovery, in the Ría de Viveiro, of the remains of the wreck of the frigate Magdalena, sunk in 1810, and in its subsequent recovery.

It depends on the Ministry of Defence and is linked to the Museo Naval de Madrid. It holds more than 2,650 catalogued records: pieces, documents, navigational instruments, plans, ship models, weapons, uniforms and paintings. The holdings also include materials from the wreck of the galleon San Gerónimo, from 1597.

The route begins outdoors, with an exhibition of more than a hundred types of anchors. Inside, the rooms are devoted to naval history and to the oceanic expeditions of the 16th to 18th centuries, with ship models, artillery and torpedo material, cartography and navigational instruments. The museum also has a specialised library of more than 20,000 works and a multipurpose room for exhibitions and cultural events.
