About the museum
The museum grew out of a touring exhibition around Galicia that the cartoonists Siro and Xaquín Marín organised in the early 1980s, together with a manifesto in defence of humour. It opened its doors on 14 November 1984 in the Casa da Cultura in Fene, with the aim of making Galicia's masters of humour known outside Galicia and of showing great humorists from other countries in Galicia.
The museum presents humour as a way of facing the difficulties of life and as a trait of the Galician character. Its rooms bring together works that criticise past and present reality, turning seriousness into humour. Today it bears the name of Xaquín Marín.
The collection includes drawings by Galician, Spanish and international authors such as Torres, Miguelanxo Prado, Kiko da Silva, Chumy Chúmez, Gila, Forges, Serafín and Mort Walker, as well as two rooms devoted to black humour and comics. Among the most unusual pieces are distorting mirrors, a sculpture of Xaquín Marín and figures such as “O galego da escaleira” (The Galician on the Stairs). The museum also awards the Curuxa humour and caricature prizes.
