About the museum
The museum grew out of the ethnographic collection of the public school “Mosteiro de Caaveiro”, gathered from 1981 in a socio-pedagogical project in which pupils, teachers and residents took part. The museum was founded in 2001, promoted by the Concello and the school through the Patronato do Museo Etnográfico da Capela, with the idea of preserving and sharing rural heritage as a resource for local development. In 2003 it moved to the rectory known as the Casa do Pazo, its current seat.
Today the museum functions as a network of three spaces that form eco-ethnographic routes. The Casa do Pazo is the central seat and shows the traditional rural house as the basic unit of peasant society, with kitchen, bedroom, weaving room, farm work, forge and other crafts. The Parque Etnográfico do Sesín is an ecomuseum that shows how the resources of the surroundings, such as woods, rocks and streams, were used. The School is a single-teacher rural school that offers a journey into the education of earlier times.
