About the museum
The sculpture park grew up around the Torre de Hércules after the restoration and musealisation of the monument, driven from the bicentenary of its reconstruction in 1992. The idea was to create a genuine open-air museum while protecting the surroundings, an area of cliffs, islets, sea caves and small beaches on the Torre peninsula, Punta Herminia, O Acoroado and the Cabal de Pradeira.
The sculptures, made mainly between 1988 and 2001, take as their reference symbols from the mythology and legends associated with the Tower: Hércules and his labours, Gerión, Breogán or Caronte. The artists include Francisco Leiro, Pablo Serrano, Manolo Paz, Moncho Amigo, Soledad Penalta, Gonzalo Viana, Ramón Conde, José Cid, Silverio Rivas, Arturo Andrade, Javier Correa, Fidel Goás and Pepe Galán.
The route combines art, history and nature: alongside the works there are petroglyphs such as the Pedra do Altar, old bulwarks, the so-called Casa de las Palabras, an old Muslim cemetery from the Civil War, and a monument to those shot during the dictatorship. The surroundings of the Tower are a World Heritage Site.
