About the museum
The museum is part of the L'Esquerda project, an archaeological site on a meander of the Ter river that has been systematically excavated for fifty years. An Iberian oppidum and a medieval village have been documented there, and experimental archaeology projects are under way in the surroundings, such as the reconstruction of a Carolingian wooden tower.
The current building occupies the former Guardia Civil barracks of Roda de Ter, a two-storey building from 1910 with a U-shaped plan around a central courtyard, about 85 metres from the site. The town council refurbished it with funding from the “1% cultural” programme, and the works were completed in 2013. The museum design project began in 2015.
The permanent exhibition opened on 1 December 2019. Under the title “L'Esquerda, la fortalesa del Ter”, it links the museum to the site and presents the results of the excavations and materials that cannot be seen on the ground, in a route from the 8th century BC to the year 1314.
