About the museum

The Museu de l'Art de la Pell opened in 1996 in the former Carme convent in Vic, now a cultural centre, and is devoted to decorative and applied arts made from leather. Its core is the collection assembled by the tanner Andreu Colomer Munmany, made up of objects made wholly or partly from this material: chests, folding screens, altar frontals, cabinets (arquimesas), chairs, saddles, masks and shadow-theatre figures.

The pieces, of great artistic richness, come from very different places and periods and show a wide variety of leatherwork techniques. Notable among them is the guadamecí, a gilded and polychrome lambskin used for wall hangings, altar frontals and folding screens, and the cordobán (cordovan), a high-quality goatskin applied to coffers and boxes.

The permanent exhibition offers a tour of the history of European decorative and luxury arts, with excursions into other cultures, such as Chinese and African, through artistic work in leather. The museum is part of the Xarxa de Museus Locals of the Diputació de Barcelona and offers a tactile module, “La Mirada tàctil”, devoted to four techniques: engraving, openwork, boiled leather and moulded guadamecí.
