About the museum

The museum opened in 1891 under Bishop Josep Morgades. Its origin was the lapidary museum of the Societat Arqueològica de Vic, created after the discovery of the town's Roman temple in 1882. At first it occupied rooms above the cathedral cloister and the episcopal palace; Josep Gudiol i Conill, curator from 1898, and Eduard Junyent, who held the post from 1931 to 1978, greatly expanded the collections.

In 1941 the holdings moved to the former school of Sant Josep, next to the cathedral. In 1995 the architects Alfons Milà and Frederic Correa rebuilt that building and erected a new one for the large ensembles; the current museum was completed in 2002, and in 2001 the Generalitat declared it a museum of national interest.

The holdings exceed 29,000 pieces. The basement shows archaeology and lapidary items; the ground floor, Romanesque and Gothic painting and sculpture from the 12th to the 15th centuries; the first floor, works from the International Gothic to the Renaissance, along with textiles, liturgical vestments and glass; and the second floor, decorative arts up to the 18th century, such as leather, goldsmith's work, numismatics, ironwork and ceramics.
