About the museum
The Museu Cerdà occupies the former enclosed convent of the Discalced Carmelites, built between 1885 and 1897 and dedicated to the Sacred Heart. The community, which at one point numbered more than twenty nuns, left the building in 1982. Puigcerdà town council acquired it in the eighties to make it the permanent home of the museum. Today the church, converted into a convention hall with 129 seats, and part of the cloister rooms, which are used as exhibition spaces and workshops, are preserved.
The idea of creating a museum with a comarcal scope in Puigcerdà dates back to the thirties and gained momentum in the seventies thanks to the Grup de Recerques Ceretanes, today the Institut d'Estudis Ceretans. Restoration of the building began in 1993 and continued for years; the definitive museological project was drawn up in 2007 with the aim of presenting the Cerdanya as a high-mountain plain, a land of passage and frontier, and of collaborating with the Musée de Cerdagne on the French side.
The collections come mainly from donations and bring together materials from the natural environment (fossils, minerals, stuffed fauna), archaeology and history, ethnology and art, as well as collections of postcards, photographs and posters. Two permanent exhibitions can currently be seen: “La casa cerdana”, on the evolution of the architecture and family life in the Cerdanya between the mid-19th and late 20th centuries, and “Conventus”, devoted to the medieval convents of Puigcerdà and to the enclosed convent that now houses the museum.
