About the museum
The Museu de la Vinya i el Vi de Muntanya opened to the public in 2006 in El Pont de Bar, in the north-eastern part of the Alt Urgell. It occupies a former cortal, Cal Teixidoret, at the entrance to the new village, which was rebuilt after the 1982 floods, and has two floors with independent entrances.
The exhibition seeks to answer why there is a wine museum in this part of the Pyrenees. Until the end of the 19th century the vine was the main crop of the district, despite the altitude and steep terrain, which was farmed in terraces. The phylloxera plague destroyed the vineyards and changed the future of the Alt Urgell, where dairy cattle farming took over and the landscape was transformed. The terraces of El Pont de Bar, which climbed from the Segre to Aristot and Castellnou de Carcolze, are a good example of that popular engineering.
The upper floor explains everything related to vine cultivation, with panels on the history, the phylloxera and grape varieties, and a display case with tools. The lower floor recreates a winery with vats, casks and bottles, and covers the winemaking process and the consumption of wine. The museum is part of the Ruta dels Oficis d'Ahir de l'Alt Urgell.
