About the museum
The Museu Espai Ceretània is at the foot of the archaeological site of El Castellot, in Bolvir (Cerdaña), and serves to explore both the settlement and the history of the region. El Castellot is one of the few Iberian settlements found in the Pyrenees and was occupied from about the 4th century BC. It preserves communal structures, such as silos and a rampart with other defences, and domestic elements, such as hearths and hand mills. Its inhabitants engaged in livestock farming, agriculture, weaving and metalworking.
According to tradition, the Carthaginian general Hannibal passed through the area during the Punic Wars. The site received light Roman influence between the 2nd and 1st centuries BC and was occupied again in the High Middle Ages, between the 10th and 12th centuries.
The permanent exhibition explains the phases of the site with panels, display cases with recovered pieces, interactive and tactile elements and a short audiovisual on the history of the Cerdaña. The museum also has a multi-purpose room for temporary exhibitions, interactive panels on local history, a reconstructed Cerdaña house, an archaeology workshop and virtual reality goggles that recreate Hannibal's crossing with his army and elephants.
