About the museum
The Museu Etnogràfic Casa Cristo in Encamp is a three-storey village house that gives an insight into the life of a humble family of farmers from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The building was erected in two phases between the 18th and 19th centuries, and two families lived there in succession, the Estrella and the Cristo families. They kept livestock and farmed the land and, when necessary, worked as day labourers in the wealthier houses of the village.
The house is narrow because it was fitted onto a small plot, but it contains rooms for various uses: the cellar, a store for farm tools and, on the top floor, a more social room for festive occasions. Among the objects that have survived to the present are a stone basin and a linen cupboard with a christening gown more than a century old, small details that reflect both austerity and dignity.
The house was lived in until 1947, when its last owners emigrated to France and kept it as a second home. Encamp’s local council bought it in 1995, restored it and opened it as an ethnographic museum in 2000. It is part of the Rural Habitat Route (Itinerari de l’hàbitat rural).
