Museu de Badalona

Archaeological museum in Badalona built over the remains of the Roman city of Baetulo, with baths, streets and houses underground and a permanent exhibition.

Opening hoursAdmission €6.50 Wheelchair accessible

About the museum

In 1954-1955 works in the “clos de la Torre” in Badalona brought to light the baths of the Roman city of Baetulo, in very good condition, and the archaeologist Josep Maria Cuyàs i Tolosa identified them. The museum was built over the remains to protect them, opened partially in 1956 and was fully inaugurated in 1966. The site has been a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional since 1995.

Underground, more than 3,400 m² of the Roman city survive: the baths, which date back to the 1st century BC and are among the oldest in the Iberian Peninsula; the main cardo and decumanus with their drains; several shops (tabernae); and three blocks of houses (insulae). A circular route, with theatrical lighting, reconstructed elements and sound effects, allows visitors to walk through them. The decumanus was added to the visit in the 2010 refurbishment.

In the upper rooms, a permanent exhibition presents Badalona's first settlements, from prehistory and the Iberian period, and the Roman city of Baetulo. Among the best-known pieces are the Venus of Badalona, the Tabula Hospitalis, a bronze hospitality pact dating from the year 98, the Vas de les Naus and a portrait of Agrippina.
