About the museum
The museum occupies La Tela, a Modernista tower built in 1912 as the home of the owners of a textile factory that stood behind it. Between 1986 and 1987 the building was restored to house the museum, which opened in 1987, and the garden became part of the institution. At first it displayed plant communities and rocks from the area and live animals; the live-fauna area was closed in 1998.
In 2000 the surroundings changed with the demolition of the factory, the opening of a new street and the construction of a new building, so today the museum operates in two buildings joined without barriers: the new one, with the main entrance on Carrer de Palaudàries, and the historic La Tela.
The collections are organised into zoology, palaeontology, geology and botany. The museum also has a planetarium, a garden with the flora and geology of the Vallès Oriental, a library, a seed bank, palaeontology and malacology classrooms, and a Montseny documentation centre. It also manages the Aula de Natura at Can Cabanyes and the weather station on the Puig de les Forques.

The main entrance is at street level and two lifts give access to the floors of the new and old buildings, which connect without barriers; the doors are at least 80 cm wide. There are accessible toilets in the new building but not in La Tela, and the reception desk is not yet adapted. There is no wheelchair loan service. There are four municipal spaces for people with reduced mobility near the museum and, by prior appointment, one space in the private car park. A Braille guide with the plan of the permanent exhibition, a touch route, QR-code visits and a weekly workshop on touching live invertebrates, by prior registration, are offered. The planetarium has priority wheelchair spaces. There is little light at the exit of the first-floor lift and in the bat cave, which has a low ceiling; the garden path is dirt and uneven.
