About the museum
The Museu Municipal de Montmeló comes under the Culture department and opened on 2 July 1998. It occupies Can Caballé, a former mansion built around 1920, with two storeys, two lookout towers and decorative elements inspired by Modernism, such as the bands of white and green checkered tiles on the façade. The town council acquired the building in 1984 and in 1996 approved its refurbishment to house the museum. Since 2001 the building has been listed in the catalogue of Montmeló's historic, archaeological and natural heritage.
Since its opening it has presented the permanent exhibition “Montmeló, camins i anys”, which explains the town's historical development in the context of the Vallès and Catalonia. Initially it consisted of three modules or paths devoted to the Neolithic, Iberian and Roman periods, organised around the collection of archaeological material that Ignasi Cantarell donated to the museum in 1998. In 2001 it was extended with a medieval module focused on the Romanesque wall paintings of the church of Santa Maria de Montmeló.
The museum's aims are to conserve and display a collection that makes the history of the town known, to support local research and to foster interest in history, art and archaeology. The Roman site of Can Tacó, declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest in 2007, is linked to its project.
