Museu Abelló

Municipal art museum in Mollet del Vallès, housed in a 1908 modernist building, showing the collection of Catalan modern art donated by Joan Abelló.

Opening hoursAdmission €3.80 Wheelchair accessible

About the museum

The museum originated from the donation that the painter Joan Abelló made to the Mollet del Vallès town council in 1996. To manage this legacy the Fundació Municipal d'Art was created, and the museum opened on 27 March 1999. Later the artist made a further donation to the foundation, which considerably expanded the holdings.

The building is a modernist edifice from 1908 that was refurbished in the 1990s to make it a functional space. It has three floors and a basement: the two upper floors house the permanent collection, the ground floor has a temporary exhibition room and L'Aparador, a space for visual and experimental arts, and the basement is used for courses, lectures and small exhibitions.

The permanent exhibition is a tour of 19th- and 20th-century modern art, with particular attention to Catalan artists, and includes a section devoted to Abelló's own work. The museum also manages the Casa del Pintor, which can only be visited with a guide, and runs temporary exhibitions, workshops and educational activities.
