About the museum
The museum opened in 1993 as a private collection. The initial ensemble brought together some 500 pieces collected by Vicent Costa Mayans, who had acquired, restored and preserved them over time. In 2000, faced with the possibility that the premises would close, the island's governing institutions signed an agreement to keep the space open until a future Museum of Formentera existed. Since the creation of the Consell Insular de Formentera in 2007, this institution has taken over its supervision, and since 2017 it has managed the collection under a lease agreement with its owner.
The museum shows what life on the island was like between the 18th century and the 1950s, before the arrival of tourism, when Formentera was a poor and remote territory with a strong cultural personality and its economy was based on farming, fishing, forestry and work in the salt pans.
The exhibition, organised by theme, brings together tools for ploughing and harvesting, utensils for making bread and wine, fishing gear, carpentry and blacksmithing tools, household and sea objects, work in marès stone and several detailed models. A distinctive piece is the small locomotive of the salt pans that pulled the wagons loaded with salt. The space occupies about 100 m² in a room on the upper floor and an interior courtyard, in the centre of Sant Francesc Xavier.
