About the museum

The Museu Etnogràfic d'Eivissa occupies Can Ros, a farmhouse more than three hundred years old, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural. It is located on the Puig de Missa, about 200 metres from the village church, in Santa Eulària des Riu. The museum opened its doors on the first Sunday of May 1994 and presents the culture, the traditional economy and the customs of Pitiusan rural life. The Consell d'Eivissa acquired the building permanently in 2021.

The house itself is part of the visit: the porxo (main hall), the kitchen, the cellar, the olive press (almazara), the well and the cistern, and on the upper floor the sleeping rooms (cases de dormir) and the porxet (small porch). It is an example of the rural architecture of Ibiza, admired by architects such as Le Corbusier, Erwin Broner and Josep Lluís Sert. Can Ros also has its own wine press, carved into a cave in the rock, and it is the birthplace of Antonio Guasch i Bufí (1879–1965), a Jesuit priest and linguist.

The permanent exhibition occupies the rooms of the house and includes clothing, jewellery, household objects, farm and trade tools, musical instruments, weapons and personal objects. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions, children's workshops and cultural activities, such as the summer cycle Nits de Museu.
