About the museum
The Museu Monogràfic de Pol·lèntia was created in 1987 as a section of the Museu de Mallorca, with the aim of displaying archaeological finds close to the place where they were discovered, the Roman city of Pollentia. The city was founded in 123 BCE, at the end of the Roman conquest of the Balearic Islands, and was inhabited between the 2nd century BCE and the 12th century CE; most of the objects on display belong to the 1st and 2nd centuries, the period of its greatest splendour. It is managed by Alcúdia town council (Ajuntament d'Alcúdia).
The museum occupies a municipal building of medieval origin, a former 14th-century hospital in the old town, very close to the church of Sant Jaume. It was refurbished in the summer of 2006 and organises its collection into two areas. The private area displays objects of everyday life, from kitchen utensils and tableware to jewellery and games. The public area is divided into three spaces: public life in the forum, illustrated with large-scale sculptures, inscriptions and architectural elements; spectacles; and the funerary world.
The visit is completed by the archaeological complex of the Roman city (the residential quarter of La Portella, the forum and the theatre), which has its own opening hours and depends on the Consorci de la Ciutat Romana de Pollentia. Among the museum's pieces is a bronze girl's head found in one of the houses of La Portella.
