About the museum
The Museu de Pollença occupies the former convent of Sant Domingo, built between 1588 and 1616. The Dominican friars lived there until 1836, when it was closed as a result of the disentailment (desamortización). It then served as a Civil Guard barracks, a warehouse and a library, until it was assigned to be a local museum. The church, with a basilica plan and side chapels, preserves altarpieces from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The Baroque cloister, of rectangular plan, is surrounded by four arcaded galleries with round arches on Ionic columns.
Pollença has been linked to painting since the early 20th century, first through the presence of the Catalan painters Santiago Rusiñol and Joaquim Mir, and later through the arrival from Paris of artists such as Anglada Camarasa, Tito Cittadini, Bellini, López Nagil and Montenegro. Their influence led to the creation in 1962 of the Salón Estival de Pintura, today the Certamen Internacional de Artes Plásticas (International Visual Arts Competition), whose prizewinning works form the contemporary art collection of the museum.
The museum was officially founded in 1975, with the winning works of the competition and a group of Gothic altarpieces from the town's churches. Over time the painting collection has grown, and a prehistory room, ceramics from the convent, a Kalachakra Buddhist mandala and the collection of the Argentine artist Atilio Boveri have been added.
