About the museum
The Museu de Molins de Rei was founded in 1953 in the Can Samaranch textile factory, on the initiative of Enric Madorell i Claramunt, the company's director. It all began with some Coptic fabrics from the 2nd and 3rd centuries donated by Francesc Samaranch; Madorell proposed setting up a small textile museum, which gradually expanded to other aspects of local history and culture thanks to donations from residents and to pieces from a local group that had been disbanded. In 1968 it became municipal and moved to new premises. The museum also carried out archaeological surveys across its area of influence.
It is a multidisciplinary local history museum. Its collections include archaeological material from excavations in the town and its surroundings, architectural and sculptural elements from buildings that no longer exist, such as the Palau Requesens and the Castell Ciuró, tools of traditional trades, ceramics, painting, numismatics, conchology, geology and mineralogy. The most important collection is ethnological, with workshops of the barber, the cooper, the carpenter, the ropemaker, the esparto weaver, the blacksmith and the weaver, and re-creations of a wine cellar and a traditional kitchen.
Since 1965 there has been a permanent exhibition at carrer Pintor Fortuny, 55. In 2018 new premises were opened at Ca n'Ametller, on Plaça de Catalunya, housing the permanent collection of the local painter Miquel Carbonell i Selva, which includes five works on loan from the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, and the exhibition “Molins de Rei, cruïlla de camins”, which traces local history. Since 2020 it has had an inclusive route for people with disabilities and cognitive differences.
