About the museum
The house where the painter Joan Vila Puig (1890–1963) was born, on the former Carrer Major of Sant Quirze del Vallès, which now bears his name, passed to his children after his death. The town council acquired it in December 1999, committing to restore it, keep some original rooms and turn it into a cultural facility. Since 2005 it has operated as a Casa de Cultura. On the façade, which keeps its original state, a bronze plaque has been in place since 1945 with the tribute the village paid to the painter.
The restoration has a twofold aim: to make the work of the landscape painter from Sant Quirze known in the house that saw him born, and to offer a testimony of the municipality’s historical memory by showing how a rural house of the late 19th century was. The kitchen with its hearths, sink and decorated tiles is preserved, along with the room with the original fireplace and the opening through which grapes were tipped during the harvest, the cellar with its barrels and brick vault, and the patio with the bread oven, well and latrine.
In the entrance hall is the permanent exhibition on Joan Vila Puig, with personal mementoes, his paint box, the worktable and the chair that accompanied him throughout his life, a bust of the artist by the sculptor Llorenç Cairó, a portrait of his wife on an easel, and some of his most representative landscapes. The upper floors have been turned into multi-purpose rooms for exhibitions, talks, workshops and cultural events.
