About the museum
The museum has its origins in the Torres Sala Entomological Foundation, established on 10 December 1976 to safeguard and display the insect collection of Juan Torres Sala in the former building of the Valencia Municipal Institute of Oncology, on the Passeig de la Petxina. In March 1977 the mollusc collection of Dr Siro de Fez Sánchez, donated by his widow, was added.
The venue opened on 17 February 1978 under the name Provincial Museum of the Environment. It later became the Museum of the Torres Sala and Siro de Fez Historical-Natural Collections and finally took its current official name, Museu Valencià d’Història Natural.
On 30 June 2012 the Valencia venue closed due to lack of support from the administrations. Part of the collections was moved to Alginet, where the museum continues its research, conservation and outreach work on Valencia's natural heritage. The Torres Sala entomological and Siro de Fez malacological collections remain in storage in the former Valencia building, awaiting a permanent solution. The museum belongs to the network of museums and palaeontology collections of the Valencian Community and is run by the Institut Valencià de Biodiversitat, Taxonomia i Conservació Animal (i\Biotaxa).
