About the museum
The Museu Municipal d'Alzira (MUMA) opened in 1979 on the ground floor of the Escoles Pies. It closed during the rehabilitation of that building and reopened in 1989 on the first floor of the Casa de la Cultura, in the historic Vila quarter. The building, in the late Gothic and Renaissance style, is also known as the Casa de l'Empenyorament or Casa del Carbó and has local heritage protection.
The ground floor houses the reception, an audiovisual room, the room of the Islamic city wall (a stretch of wall from the 12th and 13th centuries found in excavations), rooms for temporary exhibitions, a central courtyard and a shop. On the first floor are the rooms of the permanent exhibition: L'Apostolat, Sucro and E. Núñez, which trace the history of the region from prehistory to the 18th and 19th centuries. On the second floor are the Teodor Andreu, La Cambra and Noves Tendències rooms, the last of which is not yet open to the public.
The museum also has a specialist library, a documentary and photographic archive, and a restoration workshop. An extension is planned in the Casa d'Alòs, on Santa Llúcia street, which will house the ethnological collections.
