About the museum
The Museum Jorge Rando opened in 2014 on the initiative of Málaga City Council and bears the name of the painter whose work forms its collection. It is the first museum in Spain dedicated to Expressionism and aims to promote and research Jorge Rando's new expressionism, as well as the expressionist and neo-expressionist movement from its origins to the present day. It is run by the Fundación Jorge Rando.
The museum occupies a building annexed to the Monasterio de las Madres Mercedarias, on Calle Cruz del Molinillo. The neomedieval building, with Romanesque and Gothic features, was designed by Manuel Rivera Valentín and inaugurated in 1893. The conversion into a museum, by José Antonio González Vargas, was carried out between 2011 and 2014; it combines weathering steel, polished concrete and old brick with white walls and abundant natural light. In the courtyard, which belonged to the former Colegio de la Merced, grows a mandarin tree more than 150 years old, and the premises were extended in 2020.
The permanent collection brings together Rando's work, organised in large thematic cycles, while the temporary exhibitions explore those cycles and present leading figures of Expressionism such as Käthe Kollwitz, Ernst Barlach, Pablo Picasso or Henry Moore. Admission, guided tours and the programme are free, and events from different disciplines are held every month.
