About the museum

Nautilus is the geological interpretation centre of Mutriku. It explains the distant past of the coast, its origin and its formation from the rocks of the black flysch, which are visible in the cliffs when the tide goes out. These are the oldest flysch of the Geoparque de la Costa Vasca (Basque Coast Geopark) and among the most complex to observe and understand.

The exhibition shows fossils collected in the black flysch of Mutriku that belong to the collection of the couple Jesús M. Narvaez Amasorrain and Esperanza Azkarraga. Over some forty years of constant work they assembled a palaeontological collection of global importance, which can be seen at Nautilus thanks to an agreement with the Ayuntamiento de Mutriku.

The centre is part of the museums of the Geoparque de la Costa Vasca and of the Red de Museos de la Costa Vasca. According to the Ayuntamiento de Mutriku, the centre is currently closed, and the Narvaez-Azkarraga collection will soon be shown at the Talaixa Geomuseoa, in the convent of Santa Catalina in Mutriku.
