About the museum
The Patacada air-raid shelter was built in 1937 and 1938, during the Civil War, to protect the population of Reus from bombing by the Italian air force. It is the third largest of those built in the city. It has nearly 500 metres of galleries, five entrances and capacity for about 1,200 people, and lies about nine metres underground beneath the Plaza de la Patacada.
Reus City Council recovered it as a space for museum and memory purposes. The guided tour goes through the underground galleries and is complemented by the interpretation space “Reus sota les bombes”, which explains the bombings, the human and material losses and the efforts of citizens to build shelters. The space is organised in three areas: the historical context, a gallery of photographs of the bombings and a gallery of destruction.
