About the museum
The Turón valley was an area of mining from the 1860s until the early years of this century, and it preserves an exceptional number of remains of extractive activity in an environment of great environmental interest. The dominant company was Hulleras del Turón, a subsidiary of Altos Hornos de Vizcaya.
The guided visit starts near the Santa Bárbara shaft, the first in Spain to receive protection as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Cultural Heritage Site), and makes use of the old cutting of the narrow-gauge railway. It gives access to the La Rebaldana adit, from the late 19th century and recovered by the Asociación Cultural y Minera Santa Bárbara (Santa Bárbara Cultural and Mining Association), and to the Pozu Espinos, with its winding tower, the lamp room and a viewpoint over the spoil tip.
The route reaches the large Fortuna powder magazine, dating from 1966, near the fosa común (common grave). According to Turismo Asturias, the winding tower is the only one dating from before the Civil War that survives in the country. The interpretation centre and the chapel can only be visited on the guided tour.
