About the museum
The village of Bustiello, in the municipality of Mieres, was built between 1890 and 1925 on the initiative of the Sociedad Hullera Española, a company owned by the Marqués de Comillas. It is an exceptional example of industrial paternalism: the company provided its workers with housing, supplies, education, healthcare, leisure and culture. Its town planning and architecture draw on French inspiration, with a Catholic and Spanish character, and buildings such as a Romanesque-style church, the miners' club, the school, the hospital and the cottages for miners and managers have survived. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Cultural Heritage Site) in 2017.
The interpretation centre occupies the former residence of the engineer and is the key to understanding the whole. The guided visit, which requires prior booking, includes the centre, the chapel and an explanation of the village's exterior. The exhibitions deal with the geology of coal, the properties of the Marqués de Comillas, the development of mining and the working conditions in the comarca's mines. Other tourist facilities in Mieres are also managed from Bustiello.
