About the museum
In the summer of 1843 Victor Hugo arrived in Pasaia during a journey through the Pyrenees. He crossed the Ulia mountain on foot from San Sebastián, went down to Pasai San Pedro and from there went by boat to Pasai Donibane, where he stayed for a time in a house built in the 17th century with direct access to the bay. That house now bears his name.
The first displays devoted to the writer in the building date back to 1902. Over time, objects and mementos from various collections relating to his stay in Pasaia were gathered in the house.
The building has three floors with balconies overlooking the bay. The ground floor has housed the Pasaia tourist office, the second floor the permanent exhibition “Víctor Hugo, viaje a la memoria” and the third temporary exhibitions by local artists.
At present the interior of the house remains closed to the public, and only the façade can be seen from Donibane street.
