About the museum
Älgarås carriage museum was established and is owned by Lasse Hellsten, who has collected horse-drawn carriages, sleighs and equipment for about twenty years. The collection comprises about 260 objects, most of them from around 1800–1900, and many have been restored to drivable condition. Hellsten has driven most of the carriages himself and is active in the Vagnhistoriska sällskapet (Carriage History Society), where he is responsible for courses in carriage restoration.
The museum occupies two premises, an old cowshed and a young-cattle barn, with a total area of about 1,000 m². Each object has an information sign so that visitors can walk around on their own, and a guide is available for anyone who wants to know more. The aim is to preserve knowledge about the carriages, how they were built, restored and driven, and to show the era when the horse was the engine of society.
In connection with the museum, horse rides by carriage or sleigh are offered with the museum’s Gotland pony (gotlandsruss). Carriages and sleighs are also hired out, among other things for film shoots. The museum is a member of Sveriges Arbetslivsmuseer and of NAV, the network for industrial heritage and working-life museums in western Sweden.
