About the museum
Laxå bruksmuseum was founded in 1902 by Carl Sahlin, who was managing director (disponent) of Laxå bruk from 1900 to 1917. The museum is located in one of the wing buildings of Laxå herrgård (manor), a stone building from 1798 with walls cast from forge slag and mortar. Most of the collections come from Sahlin's time, and much of the exhibition is still shown roughly as he arranged it at the beginning of the 20th century.
Iron production in the area went on for around 300 years, and the communities of Laxå and Röfors grew up around the ironworks. The collections include samples of pig iron and rolled iron from Laxå and Röfors, ore and minerals from the works' mines, and material from the works at Aspa, Åboholm, Igelbäcken and Skagerstaholm. Laxå sulphite mill is presented with samples and a model of a sulphite digester.
The museum also displays hunting equipment for bear and wolf, traps, fishing gear, tools, household objects, scales, measures and weights, and about a hundred locks. Doctor Victor Cassel's medical equipment shows how the sick were treated in the past, and in one room hang portraits of those who ran the works. In the nearby archive from 1919 there are copies of documents and material on more recent times, for example the development of the railway, ESAB and Apoteket (the Swedish pharmacy chain). The museum is run by Ramundeboda-Laxå hembygdsförening (local heritage society).
