About the museum
Björkö-Arholma Sjömannaförening (Björkö-Arholma Seamen's Association) was formed in 1891 to support members and their dependants in need. When the era of sailing shipping on Björkö came to an end at the beginning of the 1900s, society took over more of the social responsibility, and the association instead came to work with cultural activities linked to the local heritage.
The museum was inaugurated in 1951 in Marum, but the location did not prove successful, and the museum was moved to its present site in Simpnäs, where it was reinaugurated in 1980. The collection consists mainly of a representative selection of objects from the heyday of sailing shipping in Björkö-Arholma.
Today the association works to develop and maintain the museum and the mill in Marum, and it arranges skipper evenings (skepparaftnar) and excursions. Between 2004 and 2014 it held the Simpnäsdagen (Simpnäs Day) at the museum.
