About the museum
Roslagsmuseet is located in Norrtälje's old musket factory (gevärsfaktori) on Hantverkaregatan. The town was founded in 1622 when Gustav II Adolf wanted to establish arms manufacturing here, and the factory was one of the reasons Norrtälje received town privileges. Of the large facility with workshops, forges and workers' dwellings, only the museum building remains; it was erected in the latter half of the 18th century. Over the years the house has been a file workshop, a private home and a bank.
The museum opened in the house in 1922, when Norrtälje celebrated its 300th anniversary, and was then called Norrtälje museum. In 1972 the Stiftelsen Roslagsmuseet foundation was formed by Norrtälje municipality and Roslagens fornminnes- och hembygdsförening (Roslagen Antiquities and Local Heritage Society), and the museum received its current name. Because of major renovation needs, the house was closed in 2008.
After an extensive renovation, Roslagsmuseet reopened in March 2023. The museum is owned by the foundation and run by Norrtälje municipality. On the ground floor there is a reception, a museum shop, the current exhibition and the permanent exhibition Ett fönster mot förr (A Window to the Past), which tells the story of Roslagen's history over more than 4,000 years. There is also a room set up as a stage set where visitors are invited to handle the objects. The upper floor is used for a creative workshop, workshops and lectures.
