About the museum
The lime works at Bläse on northern Gotland began with lime burning as early as the 1860s, and in 1883 three kilns are said to have been in operation at the same time. The works’ heyday was between 1920 and 1930, when up to 140 men worked here. Lime burning ended in 1946, after which limestone continued to be shipped out for another ten years or so, until the works closed in 1954.
In 1983 the then owner, Euroc, donated the entire site to the Stiftelsen Bläse Kalkbruk Industriminne (Bläse Lime Works Industrial Heritage Foundation). The same year an interest association for the lime works museum was formed, which has since built up the museum and developed its activities. The gates opened to the public in 1985, and today the activities are run by the non-profit association Bläse Kalkbruk.
The lime works museum depicts the stone industry on Gotland and the lives and working conditions of the workers. The stone train runs along a 1.7 km track from the harbour to the old, water-filled quarry; the tracks remained in place until 1972, and the track was restored in 1991. The site also has a bistro, a gallery, a flea market, a guest harbour and motorhome pitches.
