About the museum
Lärbro war hospital began construction in 1939 on behalf of the armed forces and was one of Sweden’s largest war hospitals. During the war years Swedish military personnel and civilians were treated here, and towards the end of the war, in 1944–1945, both Baltic and German refugees arrived. Operations ceased in May 1946.
The most dramatic part of the hospital’s history was the summer of 1945, when about 460 liberated concentration camp prisoners, seriously ill with tuberculosis and marked by starvation and abuse, were received and cared for. In the churchyard in Lärbro there are 45 international war graves, nine of them Jewish.
The museum is run by Lärbro hembygdsförening (Lärbro Local Heritage Association) and moved to a period-typical building among the original hospital barracks, where it reopened in summer 2024. The exhibition is based mainly on gripping accounts of people and events and is shown with documents, photographs, audio files and film, as well as many authentic objects from the time.
