About the museum
Borgholms stadsmuseum (Borgholm City Museum) is run by Ölands Kulturminnesförening (Öland Heritage Society), which was formed in 1914. In 1927 the society bought the courtyard on the corner of Badhusgatan and Köpmangatan in central Borgholm, which has roots in the early 1800s, and in 1928 it was given the name Ölands Forngård (Öland Old Farmstead). Over time the society chose to focus its activities on Borgholm's own history, and the name was changed to Borgholms stadsmuseum.
The large main building contains period interiors, industrial history and collections of Öland art and arts and crafts. The museum tells the story of Borgholm as a popular spa and bathing resort, of the port town and of the Öland Railway (Ölands järnväg), which ran from 1906 to 1961. Several smaller buildings also belong to the museum, among them a boathouse, a coachman's dwelling, a stable and a storehouse (vinkast), as well as a large garden with fruit trees and roses.
The permanent exhibition depicts how the town grew from 1816 to the present day. The activities are run by volunteers with support from Borgholm Municipality, and the museum is part of the Sjöfarkusten Småland Öland network.
