About the museum

Hullgrenska gården is one of two preserved merchant's farms in Pataholm, an old trading place on the Kalmarsund strait that flourished in the era of the trading houses. The farm was built in the mid-19th century by the timber merchant Carl Johan Hullgren, who ran an extensive trading house and among other things made Pataholm a spa resort (brunnsort). The garden behind the farm then served as the spa park.

The building is a protected building and is owned and managed by Ålems hembygdsförening (Ålem Local Heritage Society), which, together with the neighbouring Harbergska gården, has turned it into a homestead museum (hembygdsgård) and museum. On the ground floor a trading store is shown as it looked in former times, and on the upper floor is the Hullgren family's home, with decorative paintings from the 1860s and 1870s. The studio that belonged to marine painter Oscar Hullgren (1869–1948), son of the merchant, is also there, with a collection of his works.

Behind the house stands a boat that Oscar Hullgren owned during his time on Bornholm and Christiansø. It remained on Bornholm and was donated to the local heritage society in 2006. In summer a café is run in the old trading store.
