About the museum

Carl Eldh (1873–1954) was one of Sweden’s most outstanding sculptors during the first half of the 20th century. In 1919 a studio was built for him in Bellevueparken in Stockholm to designs by his friend Ragnar Östberg. The building is of tarred timber and adapted for heavy and space-demanding work, with two large, light studio rooms, the round Rotunda for rest and for receiving guests, and a smaller living room.

Eldh was the only person to use the building as a studio, between 1919 and 1954. In 1963 it opened as a museum with its furnishings and collection intact, when his daughter Brita Eldh established the Stiftelsen Carl och Elise Eldhs Ateljé (the Carl and Elise Eldh Studio Foundation). The museum was closed to visitors for some years in the 1990s for refurbishment and reopened in 1995. During 2006–2012 it was closed because of blasting work for the Norra länken road project, and in 2013 the museum was reopened. The studio and garden were designated as a listed building in 2010.

The collection consists mainly of Eldh’s sketches and casting models, around 500 studies and original models in plaster and clay, as well as a smaller number of sculptures in bronze, limestone and marble. Also here are his tools, personal objects, photographs and furniture, and the family’s private art collection, which is mostly displayed in the Rotunda.
