About the museum
Carolina Rediviva is the main building of Uppsala University Library, one of Sweden's oldest and largest libraries. The building on the rise by Dag Hammarskjölds väg was inaugurated in 1841, and the library has roots in the university's collections going back to the 17th century.
The library holds extensive special collections of manuscripts, printed books, maps and music. Its best-known treasure is the Silverbibeln (Silver Bible), Codex argenteus, a Gothic manuscript from the 6th century that is regarded as Sweden's most valuable book treasure. The library also owns the map Carta marina, printed in Venice in 1539, which was the first to depict the Nordic countries reasonably accurately.
In a special exhibition hall, a selection from the collections is shown to the public free of charge. There is a permanent exhibition that gives an impression of the breadth of the collections, as well as temporary exhibitions. Next door are Butik Carolina (Carolina shop) and Café Carolina.
