About the museum
Uppsala konstmuseum is a municipal museum of modern and contemporary art in the south wing of Uppsala Castle. The museum is run by Uppsala Municipality on behalf of the culture committee (kulturnämnden) and moved into its present premises in 1995. Before 2017 the museum also managed Uppsala University's art study collection, which then moved to the Gustavianum.
The museum's own collection consists of more than 14,000 artworks and design objects. The collection grew out of the activities of the Upplands konstförening (Uppland Art Association) and comprises mainly art from the late 19th century to the present day: painting, drawings, sculpture, installations, video art and a large collection of prints, which makes up roughly half of the holdings. It also includes an extensive ceramics collection from Upsala-Ekeby, whose donation in 1981 added around 1,300 objects.
The museum shows both temporary exhibitions and parts of its own collection in thematic exhibitions, in the reception, in the stairwells and in the café. The programme also includes concerts, dance, performance and poetry readings, and the annual festival Revolve Performance Art Days is an important part of the activities. In 2020 the municipal executive board began to investigate whether the museum should stay in the castle or move to the Kaniken block (kvarteret Kaniken).
