About the museum
Uppsala Castle was begun by Gustav Vasa in 1549 as a fortress, and many important decisions in Swedish history were made in its halls. After the town fire of 1702 the castle was rebuilt in the 18th century, while the oldest parts became ruins. Today the castle houses, among other things, Uppsala konstmuseum (Uppsala Art Museum), a café and several function rooms.
Uppsala slottshistoriska is a municipal museum that tells the story of the castle's and Uppsala's history and development. The museum is on the ground floor of the castle. The basic exhibition Slottsliv (Castle Life) portrays the castle's history of just over five hundred years through the people who lived, worked and shaped the place: royalty and politicians, but also prisoners, servants and the town's residents.
The exhibition uses testimonies, archive material and objects from the collections, and its theme is that history is constantly reassessed when new perspectives are brought forward. The museum arranges guided tours, family tours at weekends and programmes for schools and school holidays.
