About the museum
Ekeby by, also called Vänge-Ekeby, is an Uppland row village (radby) with medieval roots and a preserved village plan. The village has been listed as a protected heritage site (byggnadsminne) since 1997. The threat of demolition was averted in the early 1950s, and since then Vänge hembygdsförening (Vänge local heritage society), together with villagers and conservation officers, has given the village new life.
The homestead museum Karlssongården, dating from the 1700s, is the centre of the association's activities, with a café in summer, midsummer celebrations, exhibitions and a Christmas market. The farm has rich collections of utility objects and photographs. On a hill beside the village stands the windmill from 1807, which the association owns and looks after; it has reconstructed machinery and is shown to visitors. The association also looks after a herb garden.
