About the museum
The museum is run by Ärna Kamrat- och Veteranförening (Ärna Comrades' and Veterans' Association) and shows the history of Upplands flygflottilj F 16, which was set up in 1943. Flying operations began in spring 1944 with newly built J 22s, and in 1944 the Flygkadettskolan (flight cadet school) F 20 also moved to Ärna. The museum opened in 1993, when the wing celebrated its 50th anniversary.
The museum building was already a storehouse and lodge for Bärby manor in the 18th century, and during the wing's first years it was used as an oil store for the aircraft's lubricating oils. On the ground floor, visitors go through different eras with the aircraft types that belong to them: the J 22, the American J 26 Mustang, the jet era's J 29 Flygande Tunnan, the J 35 Draken and SK 60, and the last fighter aircraft at F 16, the JA 37 Jaktviggen.
On the upper floor the pioneer era is shown, with balloon flying, the Wright brothers' first powered flight, Swedish aviation pioneers and the setting up of F 16 in 1943. There are also display cases on conscript training, air traffic control, safety equipment, the communications service's radio equipment and the meteorologist's forecasting tools.
