About the museum

Garnisonsmuseet på Ärna (Ärna Garrison Museum) opened in 1993, when Upplands flygflottilj F 16 (Upland Air Wing) celebrated its 50th anniversary. The building was already a storehouse and outbuilding (loge) for Bärby farm in the 18th century, and during the wing's first years it was used as an oil shed for the lubricating oils of the aircraft. The museum is run by Ärna Kamrat- och Veteranförening (Ärna Comrades and Veterans Association).

On the ground floor visitors can walk through different periods with their aircraft types, from propeller aircraft such as the J 22 and the J 26 Mustang to the jet era with the J 29 Flygande Tunnan (Flying Tunnan), the J 35 Draken, the Sk 60 and the last fighter aircraft at F 16, the JA 37 Jaktviggen. A model display shows the many aircraft types that the flying cadet school F 20 used.

On the upper floor the pioneer era is shown, with balloon flying, the Wright brothers' first powered flight, Swedish pioneers and the setting-up of F 16 in 1943. There are also display cases on conscript training, air traffic control, safety equipment for flying personnel including parachutes and life rafts, the radio equipment of the signals service and a selection of the meteorologist's tools. The association also has a museum library and a collection of books and films.
