About the museum
Elyseum is the energy museum of Göteborg Energi, and the collections go under the name Energihistoriska samlingarna (Energy History Collections). Gas came to Gothenburg as early as the mid-1800s, electricity around the turn of the last century, and district heating has existed for over 50 years, and the museum tells how this development took place.
The building was completed in 1908 and taken into operation by Göteborgs Stads Elektricitetsverk (the Gothenburg City Electricity Works). Over the years the house has been used for various activities, but after a comprehensive renovation it closely resembles its original appearance. The name Elyseum was given to the house when it was re-inaugurated in 1992.
The exhibition shows the energy sources electricity, gas and district heating, how the first electric cables were laid in Gothenburg, one of the first steam engines that produced electricity in the city, and a model of the old gasworks. Small interiors show homes from the gas and paraffin world at the turn of the century up to the 1970s, when households were entirely dependent on electricity.
