About the museum

The Röhsska museet opened in 1916 in Gothenburg and is Sweden's only specialist museum for design and arts and crafts. The collections cover everything from 18th-century furniture and silver to modern design.

The museum's large Chinese collection is today one of the older museum collections in Europe. The foundation was laid by Thorild Wulff's collecting trip to China in 1912–1913. Since 2013 research into the collections and the museum's history has been carried out with the support of the Torsten Söderbergs Stiftelse (Torsten Söderberg Foundation), and between 1994 and 2018 the museum awarded the Torsten and Wanja Söderbergs pris (Torsten and Wanja Söderberg Prize) to promote arts and crafts and design in the Nordic countries.

Today the museum shows, among other things, the exhibition Designhistorier (Design Stories) with more than 500 objects from the collection, Inspiration Östasien (Inspiration East Asia), 1700-talets former (Shapes of the 18th Century), the Barock-kammaren (Baroque Room) and Falk Simons silversamling (Falk Simon's silver collection). An open storage area shows chairs from more than 300 years.
